Willump Questionaire
We are a group of university students who have an idea to build a machine that enables hobbyists and makerspaces to make PCBs in house rather than relying on companies such as JLPCB. In order to understand the market, we have made this survey, in hopes of hearing what you think, so we can ensure we make a product that people want.
What is your current position/role?
*
How often do you make PCBs?
*
How often do you buy those PCBs from JLCPCB, PCBWay or similar companies?
*
What is keeping you from have PCB prototyping machine in-house?
What should this machine at least be able to do?
*
Carve out Paths
Apply Solder Paste
Pick and Place Components
Reflow Solder
What is the max range you would be willing to pay for such a machine? (Specify currency)
*
User Experience and Learning Curve
The next few questions relate to usability of the Machine
Have you used other PCB-making tools or machines like CNC milling machines or 3D printers before?
*
Yes
No
On a scale of 1-5 how big of a priority would ease of use and a simple setup process be for you when choosing a PCB-making machine?
*
Not that important
1
2
3
4
Very important
5
1 is Not that important, 5 is Very important
Would you prefer more automation, even if it meant having less manual control over the process?
*
Yes
No
Milling
The next few questions relate to the milling/carving aspect of the machine
What precision should the machine be capable of achieving before you would consider using it?
*
If you have experience with this process, what settings would you want to be able to adjust?
Pick and Place (PnP)
The next few questions relate to the Pick and Place aspect of the machine
Do you currently place SMD components manually on your PCBs?
*
Yes
No
Would an automatic PnP system save you significant time compared to manual placement?
*
Yes
No
On a scale of 1-5 how important is PnP in your considerations when buying a PCB-making machine?
*
Not that important
1
2
3
4
Very important
5
1 is Not that important, 5 is Very important
Would you be willing to pay more for a system that has PnP rather than one without? (The machine would then only be able to do Milling, Apply Paste & Reflow)
*
Yes
No
What is the smallest size of SMD component that the PnP should be able to do before you would consider it?
*
Solder Dispensing and Reflow
The next question relate to the Solder Dispensing & Reflow aspect of the machine
Would automating the solder paste application for SMD components and reflow process save you significant time or effort?
*
Yes
No
PCB
The next questions relate to the PCB sides and size aspect of the machine
Do you typically work with single sided or double sided PCBs for your projects?
*
Single Sided
Double Sided
Non of the above
Is a double sided PCB sufficient for most of your designs?
*
Yes
No
Up to which size should the Machine be able to make PCBs? (in mm)
*
Size of Machine
The next questions relate to the size of the machine aspect of the machine
Would the size of the PCB Machine be a critical factor for you
*
Yes
No
If yes above, what would be the max size (could be measurements in mm or simply "Desktop Size")?
Is portability of the machine important to you?
*
Yes
No
Machine Speed vs Accuracy
Is speed more important than precision when producing PCB prototypes for you?
*
Yes
No
Would you rather have a machine that operates slower but has higher accuracy (factor 10 more) over a machine that is faster but less accurate.
*
Slow and accurate
Fast and less accurate
Does your designs typically require the machine to handle high-density layouts with tightly spaced components?
*
Yes
No
Maintenance and Reliability
Would frequent maintenance or having to replace parts like milling bits regularly be a concern for you?
*
Yes
No
On a scale from 1-5 how important is long-term reliability and low maintenance costs an important factor in your decision to buy a PCB machine?
*
Not that important
1
2
3
4
Very important
5
1 is Not that important, 5 is Very important
How much time would you be willing to spent to perform regular maintenance to keep the machine running smoothly?
*
Misc. Questiosn
The next sections has questions revolving around various aspects of the Machine
Is time a bigger factor than cost to you?
*
Yes
No
Is it important that the machine is upgradable, allowing for future enhancements or added features?
*
Yes
No
Is loud noise a concern to you?
*
Yes
