Connect Google or Microsoft as a custom sender using OAuth 2.0 for SMTP

We’re happy to announce that an enhanced SMTP experience featuring a new OAuth 2.0 connection is now available!

Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, or SMTP, lets you securely connect your Google or Microsoft email as a custom sender. Open authorization (OAuth) support makes SMTP configuration more secure, providing detailed permissions and an elevated user experience.

This new configuration is a proactive response to changes to SMTP support from Google and Microsoft. Recently, Google discontinued support for basic SMTP authentication, and Microsoft plans to do the same soon.

In anticipation of these changes, Jotform is adapting by integrating OAuth 2.0 support into our SMTP feature. OAuth 2.0 lets users easily and securely connect their Google or Microsoft email as a custom sender.

This integration is useful for those who don’t have a separate business email address and need to route through their private email/suite securely. With OAuth 2.0, you can send emails from your forms while maintaining the safety of your account credentials, equipped with an industry-standard protocol for secure authorization.

Take a look at how to set up this new feature.

How to use a custom email as your sender via SMTP

We’ll take a look at adding a custom Google email, and then a custom Microsoft email.

Log into your Jotform account and navigate to Settings. Click the Add Sender Email button.

Clicking on the Settings Tab and then clicking on the Add Sender Email button

Choose Google from the modal and click the Continue button.

Clicking on the Google option from the Sender Email (SMTP) Configuration Window and then clicking on Continue

Log into your preferred Google account, and allow permission when asked.

Clicking on Continue from the pop up window to give permission to Jotform

After granting permission, your SMTP will be ready. You can test it by clicking the Send Test Email button. Click Save to complete your custom sender email settings.

Clicking on Save from the Google SMTP Configuration Window

For a Microsoft email, you can follow the same steps — just select Microsoft from the modal rather than Google.

The login and permissions screen for Microsoft are slightly different, showing language preferred by Microsoft.

Once you grant access, your SMTP will be ready and you can once again conduct a test by clicking the Send Test Email button. Click Save to complete your settings.

After you’ve saved your settings, you’ll see either a Google or a Microsoft badge by your custom sender OAuth 2.0 email.

Did you know?

Some email service providers limit the number of SMTP requests that can be made per day, depending on the type of account you have.

Once your custom sender email is added to your Jotform account settings, you can select it on multiple forms without needing to set it up again.

We hope you enjoy the security and flexibility of this new feature, and feel free to let us know if you have questions in the comments!
